Q: What is hail and wind damage?
A: Any damage that your property has sustained as a result of hail {usually 1" or larger} striking your home in moderate to heavy volume. High winds can also severely increase the amount of physical damage to your home or business' exterior structure. Typically, this type of forceful hail will damage and compromise the integrity of asphalt composite shingles, cedar shake, metal roofs, aluminum siding, as well as vinyl siding and aluminum gutter systems. If enough damage has been sustained to your property, your insurance company may be liable for the damages to your property.
Q: Why is hail and wind damage important to repair?
A: Large hail can travel at speeds up to or greater than 50mph. Therefore, hail damage will reduce or completely eliminate the life expectancy of your roof, siding, and gutter system. Hail damage to asphalt shingles can cause soft spots or bruising that may or may not be visible to the naked eye. Hail will often blast away the shingle granules on your roof exposing the unprotected fiberglass/asphalt base, leading to the deterioration of your roof. In reference to aluminum siding and gutters, hail will generally pelt and dent these soft metals beyond reasonable repair. As for vinyl products, such as vinyl siding, the exposed sides are often broken when struck by hail. If any or all of these products on your home have been damaged by severe hail or wind, all warranties would be null and void. Furthermore, one of the most damaging side effects of storm damage is that the value of your home or business has been compromised.
Q: What impact will filing a claim have on my insurance?
A: If your home is located within the "hit zone" of the storm, the insurance commission will declare your area a "National Catastrophe." Unfortunately, your rates will increase slightly whether you file a claim or not, since rate increases are usually determined by zip codes. One positive aspect, filing a claim due to the dated storm will be filed under the "Act of God" or "Catastrophe" portion of your policy, therefore, filing a claim will not count against your record.
